Life is interesting, innit?

When I was 15 years old, I was talking to my sister’s friend, a 25 year old. He had graduated college and seemed to have an incredible job. I was eating it up. And I remember thinking to myself “I can’t wait until I’m 25. I’ll have it all figured out then. Just like him”.

Then I became 25.

And I saw 30 year olds and had the same thought… “Man, it’s gonna be real nice when I have everything figured out… like him”

Then I turned 30…

And realized we are all just figuring shit out as we go.

It’s a big guessing game. Those who say they have it all figured out actually don’t. There’s no point in “having it all figured out” because there is always something to do… something to learn. And no matter where you are in life, someone is “ahead” of you.

Oddly enough, I found comfort in this.

Everyone is a beginner. Always.

And there’s a lot of beauty in that.

Every answer presents more questions

Or in other words:

“Mo money mo problems”

or “Mo answers mo questions”

Lol.

But seriously, the path to truly achieving greatness isn’t found in cruise control. It’s in understanding that you are always a beginner. And embracing that.

Think about this for a second.

When was the last time you felt like a beginner?

My hunch is, whenever that was, you were:

  • Excited about a new project.
  • Envisioned potential opportunities it could present.
  • Jumped right in even though you had no idea what you were doing.

Being an ‘expert’ is a status symbol, not an asset.

The asset is in the willingness to do something new, learn something you’ve never learned before, and put yourself out there for the world to see and potentially opening new doors.

Beginners are driven, willing, and excited.

They have a vision.

But it takes effort.

True experts are constant beginners.

A beginner says:

  • “I don’t know but I’ll figure it out.”
  • “Who could help me get from A to B?”
  • “I don’t know what I’m doing but who cares, keep moving forward”

So the quicker you learn that you’ll never “have it all figured out”, the better. Not when you’re 25, 35, or hell, even 75. There’s something to learn and growth that awaits.

Do that over and over again and see where it takes you in 5 years.

Most people fail because they lose sight of being a beginner.

It looks like this:

  1. Excited to start something new.
  2. Learn, learn, learn.
  3. Get exposed to new challenges they didn’t see coming.
  4. Lose motivation to keep going.

They expected to become an expert and felt disappointed that they still didn’t know what they were doing.

But remember, every answer presents more questions.

Every time you move forward is another opportunity to embrace the beginners mindset.

Keep pushing forward.

Embrace it.

Grow.

As waves start building, I scan the water and see smaller boats getting tossed around like toys. But we’re cruising along. Completely unaffected. That’s when it hit me… Equipment Matters We cut through those same waves like butter. Same storm. Same lake. Completely different experience. That’s when it...

You’re standing on top of a mountain. Maybe you were camping or just went for a hike. And your car is parked down the west side of the treacherous incline. You take in the beaty of your surroundings. The peace of birds chirping and squirrels trotting around you, you notice the sun start to set. That’s ok. I’ll build a fire. You’re...
